High quality optics with modest specifications, April 29, 2011 By This review is from: Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) Full Frame Lens for Sony Mount Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics) The SAL2875 was introduced into the Sony Alpha family fairly recently. By looking at the specification of the lens alone, it is quite difficult for a photographer owning an more than a handful of Alpha lenses to decide if this lens would serve any purpose that is not already covered by those handful of Alpha lenses he/she already owns. For one thing, with the exception of the constant wide aperture of F2.8 being its best selling point, from 28-75mm, at its widest, the SAL2875 is not particularly wide (42mm) on an APS-C body to shoot landscape photographs, and at its furthest (112.5mm), it can't quite reach the distance attainable by alot of cheaper, beer can varieties that are much easier to carry and perform nearly as well, optically.
The price tag of the SAL2875 is not exactly attractive either. Being just a hair short of 800 dollars, this lens carries some of the physical characteristics of the very cheap, low end "easy choice" lenses released by Sony for beginners and... Read more
Simply Beautiful Photos, July 19, 2011 This review is from: Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) Full Frame Lens for Sony Mount Digital SLR Cameras (Electronics) I have this lens for a year now and I simply love it. I have used it with my DSLR-A300 & DSLR-A580.
A ideal lens for low light situation and great for portraits if you want to isolate your subject while adding a beautiful bokeh.
The built of this zoom lens feels pretty solid, and is quite compact, which makes it a delight to take it with me while travelling.
